Undergravel Filters

Undergravel filters offer a popular choice of filtration that can be a space saver in the aquarium, these are a slatted plastic tray that sits on the base of the aquarium creating a false floor, this is then covered with gravel (sand is not recommended) to create a water-filled space.

Uplift pipes are connected at one of both ends of the plate and a powerhead filter or airstone powered by an airpump is then used to create suction to pull the water and solid waste into the gravel providing oxygen rich water for the bacteria.

The filter traps the debris mechanically and creates a colonisation bed for friendly bacteria.

We use undergravel filters in many of our own aquariums at the shop.
